A Lorraine sculptor known for his work with metal and reclaimed materials, Jean-No infuses his creations with a raw, organic power, imbued with tension and emotion. His gorilla sculptures, emblematic of his work, are figures of silent power, where the polished surfaces contrast with the raw material, in a masterful play of textures.
Collaborating with Daum in 2020, Jean-No transposed his universe, stemming from the expressionist movement, which had made him a specialist in the dense and hard material of steel. From this, he created fluid and light forms, achieving a new sensory dimension. Using scrap materials – metallic parts gleaned from a scrap metal dealer – he transformed them into sparkling sculptures, veritable faceted steel jewels.
The crystal paste becomes a natural extension of his work, revealing the musculature, tensions, shadows, and glints of light with unprecedented subtlety. Far from freezing the animal, the living matter of the crystal seems to make it vibrate, ready to come alive.
The Silverback Gorilla , available in grey amber and grey blue, is a masterful reinterpretation of the artist's bestiary: a balance between fragility and power, between the refinement of gesture and the brutality of form.
This collaboration perfectly embodies the spirit of Daum: to bring tradition and modernity into dialogue, to combine the nobility of materials with creative freedom. With Jean-No, the crystal manufacturer supports the emerging French art scene; together they embrace a radical and sculptural aesthetic, at the crossroads of design, contemporary art, and untamed nature.
