Collaborations THE ARTISTS
MAISON DAUM
The pâte de verre technique is rare and very ancient. This technique dates back to 5000 BC (examples have been found in the tombs of pharaohs). Long forgotten, it was rediscovered by Daum in 1900 and then reworked in 1968. The process is extremely delicate to handle. The pieces obtained by this fusion of pieces of crystal mixed in a mold possess a grain, a texture, and a softness of contours that cannot be obtained with blown glass.
A unique expertise
Through this collaboration, Hicham Lahlou and Cheick Diallo combine their perspectives and artistic sensibilities to create a true manifesto object. Together, they present a work that transcends the simple function of an incense burner, becoming a symbol of dialogue, sharing, and unity, celebrating the richness and diversity of African cultures through a universal language.
With the Constellation incense burner, Hicham Lahlou and Cheick Diallo join forces with Maison Daum to crystallize a powerful narrative: that of a plural Africa, rich in languages and diverse beliefs, yet united through shared gestures and traditions. Here, incense—an enduring symbol of spirituality, memory, and human connection—becomes a medium for creation and transmission.
Crafted using Daum's ancestral pâte de cristal technique and enhanced by a finely pierced gilded incense holder, this medkhan pays tribute to the rituals of the East while boldly expressing the creativity of contemporary African design. The crystal, with its distinctive texture and subtle gradations of transparency, captures and refracts light to evoke the glowing warmth of fire.
Echoing the aesthetics of the African continent, the piece is adorned with a delicate pattern of engraved dots—a refined artistic reference to traditional African motifs that brings both graphic texture and historical depth to the object. In contrast, the openwork upper structure allows wisps of incense smoke to rise gracefully while evoking constellations and celestial bodies, timeless spiritual and symbolic guides. Every detail reflects Maison Daum's exceptional craftsmanship and mastery of textures, seamlessly transitioning from satin-polished surfaces to crystalline transparency.
More than 350 collaborations have shaped the manufacture's creations, with art icons such as Majorelle, Dalí, Arman, or César, but also Villeglé, Etienne, Texier, and essential design signatures like Tallon, McConnico, Massaud, or Ghion. Daum has not missed any of the magical encounters of artistic creation and modern savoir-faire, constantly perpetuating the marriage of art and craftsmanship.
