The Humble Art of Crystal

African Art

Each handcrafted piece celebrates the balance between tradition and modernity, between symbolic power and contemporary elegance. This universe is in line with Daum's artistic approach: to transform matter into emotion, while promoting the diversity of cultures and the transmission of knowledge. Daum African Art is a meeting between the art of origins and the refinement of French art crystal.

Romuald Hazoumé

A major Beninese artist on the contemporary African scene, Romuald Hazoumé is internationally recognized for his masks made from repurposed gasoline canisters, which have become symbols of resistance, memory, and denunciation of the trafficking that plagues West Africa. In a unique encounter between committed art and ancestral know-how, Maison Daum invited Hazoumé in 2008 to reinterpret his iconic work, *Blue Oil Head* , in crystal glass. Sculpted in the transparency and vibrant nuances of the material, this contemporary mask carries a profound resonance. It echoes traditional African faces while embodying social critique: that of the artisanal gasoline trafficking, a daily reality for millions of Beninese.

The Humble Art of Crystal

Daum x Hervé Di Rosa

Since 2009, Daum has maintained a vibrant collaboration with the French artist Hervé Di Rosa, a key figure in contemporary French art. Together, they create unique and powerful works, where the artist's abundant universe finds a new resonance in crystal glass. An unclassifiable artist, an insatiable globetrotter, and founder of the MIAM (International Museum of Modest Arts) in Sète, Hervé Di Rosa is one of the pioneers of the Free Figuration movement. This artistic movement claims total freedom of creation by abolishing the boundaries between high art and popular culture. Di Rosa draws his inspiration from comics, primitive arts, crafts, graffiti, and popular iconography, which he assembles in a vibrant, spontaneous, and deeply narrative graphic language. His commitment to Modest Art, which he defines as a celebration of often marginal forms, everyday objects, and forgotten aesthetics, guides his entire approach. Each work is an ode to diversity, to the collective imagination, and to the richness of local expressions. His art, which is both colorful, joyful, and symbolic, finds a unique echo in the luminous material of crystal.

HERVÉ DI ROSA

This enduring alliance between the artist's hand and the expertise of the crystal factory reveals a world of timeless elegance, where each sculpture becomes a hymn to inner beauty.

It traverses the ages like a creative breath, embracing artistic trends with grace and audacity. Each era offers it a new language, which it shapes with the delicacy of its master glassmakers, while keeping intact the luminous memory of Lorraine tradition. In the African Art collection, Daum pays tribute to the cultural and spiritual richness of the African continent. Inspired by primitive forms, masks, and totems, the sculptures convey an inner strength, ancestral wisdom, and a deep respect for nature. The warm shades of amber, bronze, honey, and smoked crystal evoke the earth, the sun, and the vitality of Africa.
